What's included
5 practice tests modelled on the standard UK train driver assessment
Vigilance Test
Monitor a central stimulus for 30 minutes and respond the instant it changes. Tests sustained attention under real conditions.
- 30-minute simulation
- Random stimulus intervals
- Hits, misses & reaction time
Scene Perception Test
A traffic scene flashes for one second. Identify every element you saw. Tests perceptual speed and accuracy under real pressure.
- 20 scenes per session
- 1-second flash
- Per-element accuracy scoring
Rules & Procedures Recall Test
Read a fictional safety-rules document, then answer 18 questions from memory. Tests how quickly you absorb procedural information.
- 5-minute timed read
- 18 questions from memory
- 6 different passage sets
Beats & Symbols Test
Count audio tone beats while scanning symbol pairs for matches simultaneously. The hardest test in the battery — least prepared for.
- 3 progressive difficulty levels
- Audio + visual simultaneously
- Closest simulation available
2-Hand Coordination Test
Use two joysticks independently — one per hand — to guide a dot through a maze track. A practice tool modelled on the format of the official bilateral coordination test.
- Gamepad or keyboard support
- 10 attempts, same track
- Speed + accuracy scored separately
Divided Attention
The hardest test in the battery — now you can practice it
The Beats & Symbols test is the one candidates are least prepared for. You must scan a grid of symbol pairs for matches while simultaneously counting audio tones in your head — exactly the kind of divided attention train drivers need every day.
- ✓Part 1 — Beat counting only: count the low tones, ignore the high ones
- ✓Part 2 — Symbol scanning only: click every matching pair in 45 seconds
- ✓Part 3 — Both at once: the real divided-attention challenge
Click pairs where both symbols match
The reality
Most candidates fail not because they lack ability — but because they've never seen the tests before.
30 min
Vigilance test length
Sustained attention for half an hour is genuinely difficult. Without prior exposure, most people see their focus drop sharply in the second half.
1 sec
ATAVT scene duration
One second to absorb a full traffic scene. Candidates who haven't practiced are still processing the image when it disappears.
Dual task
Beats & Symbols challenge
Counting audio beats while scanning symbols simultaneously. The hardest test in the battery — and the one people are least prepared for.
Practice changes this.
Candidates who practice realistic simulations know what to expect, build stamina, and arrive confident. That's the difference.
FAQ
Common questions
Which train companies use these tests?
The standard train driver test battery is used by virtually all UK Train Operating Companies — Avanti West Coast, GTR, Northern, Southeastern, CrossCountry, LNER, South Western Railway and more.
How closely do these match the actual tests?
Our tests are modelled on the format, timing and parameters of the actual assessment — 30 minutes for Vigilance, 1-second flashes for ATAVT, dual-task structure for Beats & Symbols.
Do I need to do the Vigilance test in one sitting?
Yes — the official test runs 30 minutes continuously. Use the early-stop option to build stamina, but aim to complete full sessions before your assessment date.
