South Western Railway operates high-frequency commuter services from London Waterloo — one of the UK's busiest termini — as well as regional routes to Exeter. Driver selection is rigorous, and the OPC psychometric test battery is a key gateway in the process.

The South Western Railway OPC Assessment
SWR's commuter routes see extremely high service frequencies, particularly on the main line to Southampton and Portsmouth. Drivers work long shifts in demanding conditions and must maintain high levels of vigilance throughout. The 30-minute Vigilance Test directly simulates this requirement.
The ATAVT is particularly relevant given the number of level crossings and busy station environments on SWR's network. A one-second flash of a complex scene followed by immediate recall is exactly what a driver faces approaching a busy suburban station at speed.
SWR assessments are typically held at their Waterloo or Woking facilities. The OPC battery runs on a dedicated computer system — knowing what the interface looks like and how the tests flow means you can focus entirely on performance rather than figuring out the mechanics.

Common questions
What traction do South Western Railway trainee drivers train on?
SWR operates predominantly Class 444, 450, 455, 456, and 458 trains, with newer Class 701 Arterio units now entering service. Trainee drivers are trained on the traction relevant to their depot after passing the selection process including the OPC.
Which tests are included in the OPC battery?
The core OPC battery includes the Vigilance Test (WAFV), ATAVT, TRP1, and Beats & Symbols (TEA-Occ). Some operators additionally include TRP2 or other cognitive assessments. All are governed by RSSB standard RIS-3751-TOM.
Is this the same as the official test?
No. These are independent practice tests modelled on the format and parameters of the official OPC assessment — 30 minutes for the Vigilance test, brief flashes for the ATAVT. No practice site can replicate the exact proprietary software, but the format is designed to be similar.
